Get a dream for your family!

      Hello everyone!

Thank you for visiting my new blog.  It’s a work in progress, just like me and my family. I feel honored that you have chosen to allow me to participate with you in a small way in your life’s journey.

I’ve recently met some of you at home school conferences over the spring and summer, but this message is for all parents – not just home schooling parents.

We get this one chance – a chance of a lifetime, to influence our kids as they grow up in our homes.  Let’s do it with intention, with purpose, with an end goal in mind.

Take this one step as soon as you can….begin thinking about what it is that you want at the end of this home school and parenting thing. What is it that you want to see in your family, in your kids, and in yourself?

Are you interested in particular character traits, such as dependability, honesty, kindness, trustworthiness? Are you interested in creating solid, healthy relationships within your family, and beginning to establish practices that encourage healthy relationship building with others? Perhaps your desire is to educate your children in a manner that builds on their strengths and prepares them for their unique path in life.

Think about the people you admire. Ask yourself what it is about them that you admire.

Those might be good things to work toward.

Don’t get hung up right now on whether your goals meet the ‘requirements’ for goals – that they are measurable, have a time limit, etc. Just begin thinking about what it is that you find important.

Ask God to guide your thinking, and then write it down!

Frame it. Hang it in your bathroom or some place you’ll see it often. Read it often. Share it with your kids.

I’ll go first….you can see ours in this picture with typos, wrinkled paper and all. (Click on it to see it bigger.) We were two years into our home schooling journey before we could articulate what we wanted. Give yourselves time!

      These were our goals:

      Lifestyle/Career

To know Christ and make Him known

To develop a true servant’s heart

To create a self-sufficient family business

      To live debt free

To maintain a spirit of peace in the home

      To practice hospitality

      To be our children’s heroes

      Home Schooling

To develop character:  dependability, joyfulness, trustworthiness, diligence, patience, obedience, wisdom, honesty, self-control, tolerance, initiative, forgiveness, and love

To develop integrity – to be a person of our word and to live by Godly standards.

      To pursue excellence in education

To develop an appreciation for the arts and sciences

Now then, grab your spouse and a cup of coffee and get to dreaming about the possibilities!  Dream big!
